CHILDS FIRST VISIT

A child’s first visit to the dentist should be a pleasant experience in order to instill a positive association with visiting the dentist and ensure a healthy attitude to dental treatment for years to come.

A common question asked is “At what age should I bring my child to the dentist for the first time?” The answer varies but ideally a child should first see the dentist between the ages of 6months and 12months. While this may seem young and one might say “the teeth will fall out anyway right?” Well, while this is true, but bringing your child to the dentist when they first start getting their primary teeth will be greatly beneficial for a number of reasons…

–          It allows the child to become acclimatized to simple check up procedures such as having the mirror and probe in the mouth.

–          It allows the dentist to assess the caries rate of the child and plan for preventative treatment such as topical fluoride.

–          If trauma or a toothache were to arise then the child will be used to visiting the dentist and the experience will be a lot easier for everyone, parent included! A child in pain can be a very upsetting time so a friendly face would make emergency treatment easier.

–          Primary teeth may “..fall out anyway..” but early loss of primary teeth due to trauma or caries can have a harmful effect on the child not only psychologically but it can also lead to loss of space and as a result lead to crowding in the adult dentition.
